The Spirit of Love

Have you ever been split open by love?

Not lowercase love, but uppercase Love. The pure space of connection that surpasses circumstance and shines from a luminous place of unending and limitless creation?

This kind of communion is as vulnerable and mortifying as it is supremely beautiful, humbling, and empowering.

We need our protective casing. There’s precious necessity for the edges of ourselves. It’s ok, encouraged, to be protected and fortified.

There is also delight in the ecstatic moments of being lovingly broken open. Touched, not by a person, nor by any individual source or scenario, but by ineffable, primordial, loving awareness.

In this cracking open, the finite point of “me” becomes a stretched note within a terrifying chorus. The light and shadow and vibrancy of the world rippling in the eye of a dragonfly, an eagle, a passing star.

Have you been here?

The expansion at the beginning of the universe happens over and over again. The birthing and collapsing of universes is the expansion and contraction of our precious hearts, which have the capacity to feel so much, and fall so far into loss.

Let’s bow to this. This breaking open. The allowance for the Big Pulse and the Low Tide.

The infinite visits us through many forms.

She can appear through the eyes of a lover.

Sometimes she is caught, glimpsed in the corner of a friends lips as they speak.

They don’t know how much eternity they let show in their idiosyncrasies.

The infinite also visits in the feeling of blood, warmed by running limbs.

She’s available in sound of water as she sings over rocks and saturates the soil.

Chords within a song have a special way of rousing her attention.

And in stillness. She’s there too in screaming abundance.

This is the Beloved.

I’ve seen myself, and many others, turn their backs on her.

It’s easy when being truly felt, held, and touched, is such an acute and awe-some sensation, to forsake her.

And when she goes we are at risk of becoming bitter lovers, resigned to a fate of mediocrity. Missing the ecstasy in the mundane.

But like any relationship, devotion bears us through many iterations of presence. In devotion, we catch ourselves falling asleep, and pull our awareness back into focus.

It’s up to us to court the love of the divine alive within ourselves.
