Song of Unseen Soma: Lunar Eclipse 11/8/22

A restless beauty stirs below your skin. What within your flesh and bone body is awaiting your loving presence?

The highest prayer for this portal is to make love with the unseen places in ourselves that we’ve stigmatized and strategically placed in the shadows. To move into cathartic wisdom about what we have yet to say aloud - but have been silently shrieking at the level of our cells.

When you utter a statement that pierces you to your closest truth, there is renewed vitality. What’s unspoken? What’s unsung? Don’t ask your mind. Ask your body. Our soul is not outside our body, nor stored within it. It is the body, it is the earth.

This soul-body has a song of its own, that lives beyond the intellect. I’ll call this Singing the Soma.

Singing it bestows renewable energy. Repressing is unconsciously exhausting and diminishes the ease of access to your life-force. Repressed anger, resentment, secrets kept, unexpressed enthusiasm, undanced steps. These have a way of eating you inside out until you’re depleted, tired, and may not know why.

Both of the predominant energies in this eclipse can be repressive in their own way, Scorpio guarding its soft belly and Taurus in its stubborn hope to carry all burdens. This eclipse has a volcanic fingerprint, with the oceanic feelings of Scorpio surging wildly beneath the earthen containment of Taurus, longing to crack through and flood the upper realms.

Is there something you’ve been wanting to say? Something bubbling below.

Eclipses are about veiling and obscuration, so it’s possible you’re not yet consciously attuned to what you need to say, but with eccentric Uranus in the fold, the eclipse leans in to split you open, to get you closer to finding the Song of your Soma.

Singing your Soma can be literal singing - but it may be stretching, running, self-loving (and I mean loving - not only pleasuring), playing a drum, screaming into a pillow, writing for hours on end, being on your timeline, and your timeline alone. Singing your Soma is making space for your unheard self to surface, so as to reveal what expressions are truly authentic to you.

Another way to Sing your Soma may be the ability to immediately name a simple feeling, with responsibility, without repression, guilt, shame, or any attempt to change it. Immediately, the feeling gets breath. A sensation in the body, such as sorrow, or ecstasy, that is tamped, becomes putrid.

It’s sometimes forgotten that we don’t need to practice Singing our Soma with people. We also have the allies of the land, the ancestral plane, the plant realm. If you find yourself electrified with new insights and reckless impulses, turn it into an offering for the land before you try it out with a human.

Run through the woods. Cry your tears and confessions into the petals of a flower. Dig a hole in the earth (respectfully) and leave a morsel of food. Talk to the air. Let these expressions resonate in space and wait to see if they continue to carry such potency, or if the expression itself changes your course.

With the emphasized involvement of Venus, Venus-ruled and “feminine” signs with this transit, there is an electric charge to this eclipse that sends bolts of awareness into the hidden feminine aspects of self and culture. She very well may be the one that’s demanding your expression and attention. She calls for a reckoning. The primordial feminine wants to be felt in her full empowerment.

When I speak to the archetypal feminine aspect, I speak to the quality of inwardness, of moonlit scenes that merge thought and form into the subtle and profound realm of feeling. A scene of dreamtime, in which images combine in unexpected ways to evoke potent emotions that surpass the literal mind. In this way, the feminine archetype is mythopoetic. This eclipse points to our collective deficiency in this lifeway.

In a cultural landscape that prizes empirical data, this place of liminality and feeling is often ridiculed as illogical, indulgent, scary, and lacking applicable value. Here we see the square with Saturn in Aquarius, who's austere, impersonal, and technical in contrast to the intimate embodiment of Scorpio and Taurus. Forming a tether between the Sun and the Moon as he squares both planetary bodies, Saturn represents the conformity and responsibilities that we are holding as we search for our Song. He is welcome. Saturn’s limitations give us useful form and definition, but it’s possible that the playground we search within has become a bit too intellectual for us to find a tune that satisfies the soul.

Our shadow cannot be intellectualized into consciousness without the body. The true “feminine” will not be welcomed in a culture that has fragmented its connection to mythic thinking and reverence for wildness.

Closing invitations:

Remember that eclipse portals are moments of rest and inward reflection. It’s time for a mundane and magical mellow. Take your salt bath and let the energies ride without capturing them, magnifying them, or ritualizing them. Anything that leaves a magical imprint is better to be set on other days.

Recall the tip on allyship to the more than human realms. These planetary energies can stir the pot of our inner being and we don’t want to exercise that on one another, but digest them internally as best we can before taking them to our human allies.

With honor and reverence listen slowly for the messages of your soul-body.

Show up for the response.

The astrology behind the writing:

At the peak of the lunar eclipse on November 8th at 3:01am PT, the Sun and Moon oppose one another at exactly 16˚ of Scorpio and Taurus, respectively.

The Moon is joined to Uranus and the North Node in the 8th house, all in Taurus.

The Sun is conjunct Mercury, Venus and the South Node, in the 2nd house, in Scorpio.

Moon, Sun, Mercury, Venus, Uranus, and the Nodes all square off to Saturn in Aquarius in the 5th house.

Venus is the Asc ruler, with the rising sign at 00˚ 02’ Libra.
